"Erawan shrine" is considered to be one of the most touristic spots in Bangkok Thailand,
the shrine is housed by statue - a 4 headed representation of Hindu god. People attend
the sacred place, pray and express their wishes.
This small territory has had a history of tragic events. Starting from the circumstances
in which the shrine was erected in 1956 - built as part of the government-owned Erawan
Hotel to eliminate the bad karma believed caused by laying the foundations on the
wrong date. Furthermore, the place had once been used to put criminals on public
display. In 2006, a mentally ill man smashed the statue with a hammer and was beaten
to death by people who visited the shrine.
This video focuses on another traumatic event that took place in 2015. Close to the
shrine, a bomb was placed, the explosion led to the death of 20 people and the injuring
of 125. The shrine and the damaged statue were restored two days later and reopened
for the public, leading to criticism - claiming the government was whitewashing the
bombing in order to reassure tourist (that highly contribute to that local economy) that
the area is safe.
